Oakdale Police dealt with an assault near the Stanislaus River this past week and also are continuing the investigation into a major injury accident that occurred on Saturday.

Police Chief Jerry Ramar said the assault happened on Wednesday, July 31 and was reported initially as a water rescue on the river near Cost Less. When officers and other emergency responders arrived on scene, they discovered a man had been assaulted and was on the riverbank, partially in the water. He was taken by ambulance from the scene and Ramar said officers investigating the case also made an arrest.

Alphonso Nyangweso, 39, was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

He was “arrested for three felonies and a misdemeanor,” said Chief Ramar.

“There were two subjects by the river that got into a physical fight,” the chief added. “Officers arrived on the scene and arrested the primary aggressor for assault and other various charges.”

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Nyangweso was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail, awaiting an Aug. 8 court date on the charges.

On Saturday, Aug. 3 shortly before 11 a.m., emergency crews responded to West F Street for a report of a two-vehicle collision.

“The investigation is still being conducted, so we can not release any other information except that there was a motorcycle and a large construction truck involved,” Ramar said. “The motorcyclist was headed westbound, while the truck was headed eastbound in the area of F and Oak.”

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with major injuries; traffic was rerouted around the area for a time as a portion of the roadway on West F Street was shut down for the investigation.
