One arrest in connection with March 23 fatal crash

An early morning crash on Monday, March 23 left one person dead, two others injured and the driver under arrest on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter.

According to the California Highway Patrol in Modesto, they received a call of a traffic crash on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Claus Road, shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located a Honda sedan with major rollover damage. The left rear passenger succumbed to her injuries at the scene. She was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Amber Coffey, 34, of Modesto.

Two additional passengers, a 33-year-old male from Modesto and a 62-year-old female from Modesto, were transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the Honda, identified as Michael Anthony Smith, 39, from Modesto, was uninjured. Authorities said Smith displayed objective signs of being under the influence and was subsequently placed under arrest for felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.

The preliminary investigation indicates Smith was driving a 2010 Honda sedan southbound on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Claus Road. He allowed the Honda to leave the east road edge where it overturned several times before coming to rest.

Claus Road was temporarily closed to investigate the crash.
