The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Feb. 25 through Monday, March 3. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MARCH 3
Battalion 2: Crews completed weekly engine checks on their first out apparatus.
The new Engine 21 is nearly completed, undergoing its final tests at Hi-Tech EVS and is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
Battalion 5: Crews completed weekly apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 28 and 29 trained on hose stretches, operation of the RAM and pumping evolutions.
Engine 27 trained on pump parts identification and operation.
SUNDAY, MARCH 2
The second annual Modesto Fire Department and Modesto Police Department donkey basketball game was held at MJC. Both sides played well and MPD ultimately came out on top in the end.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 29 trained with Truck 1 on aerial master streams.
Engine 27 and Engine 28 trained on hose stretches and pumping evolutions.
3:29 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 to Rice Road and Smith Road for a vehicle vs. a tree. Firefighters arrived on scene to find one vehicle off the roadway into a tree. The lone driver was evaluated and refused medical treatment.
SATURDAY, MARCH 1
Companies conducted a mock engineer’s test prepping for the upcoming engineer’s practical test.
Fire Explorer training was held at the RFTC. Explorers trained on hose.
Battalion 2: Engines 24 and 26 trained on drafting and hose pulls for Saturday drills.
Engines 3 and 21 trained on trunk lines for Saturday drills.
Quint 22 completed the cone course and a few hours of driver training as part of the engineer task book signoffs.
Battalion 5: Modesto Fire Department members gathered at Get Fit in Oakdale for a fundraiser for the upcoming Stair Climb to raise awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
E27 trained at Station 17 on forcible entry and ventilation tactics utilizing the props.
E29 trained on hose stretches at the Knights Ferry School.
7:42 p.m. – E28 responded to a vehicle fire in the 3000 block of Crow Road in rural Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to find a fully involved car.
FRIDAY, FEB. 28
MST personnel took the written exam for the Captains Test. This is the first step in the testing process.
Battalion 2: Crews completed weekly checks on the wildland equipment at their stations.
Quint 22 worked on parts identification in the engine compartment as part of the signoffs in the engineer task book.
Battalion 5: 1:40 p.m. – Engine 27, E28 and BC5 were dispatched to a vehicle accident on Langworth Road and Rice Road in the rural area of Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to find two cars that collided. One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
3:51 p.m. – E28, E27 and BC5 responded to a report of a solo vehicle accident on Rodden Road in Oakdale. Several callers reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the car lost control and struck a tree. The driver was able to extricate himself from the car before it burst into flames. He had moderate injuries and was taken to a Modesto hospital for treatment.
E28 had Brad Smith, a firefighter, job shadowing the engineer position and he was able to get valuable on the job experience of driving the apparatus and pumping on a fire on his first day of shadowing Engineer Tony Hein.
THURSDAY, FEB. 27
B-shift personnel completed day two of their quarterly water rescue training in the Tuolumne River.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks and participated in quarterly water rescue training.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 27 trained on the Water Rescue apparatus with other MST companies.
Engine 9 trained with Battalion 3 on fire attack scenarios in preparation for the upcoming Battalion Chief exam.
Battalion 5 supported a firefighting effort in Empire with coverage and resource management.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 26
The Central Valley Incident Management Team hosted their monthly meeting. Topics included upcoming multi-agency wildland training as well as upcoming team training.
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews participated in quarterly water rescue training.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Boat 29 and Boat 28 participated in day one of the annual boat training refresher located at Basso Bridge.
8:20 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28, and Battalion 5 were dispatched for a vehicle accident in the town of Knights Ferry. Engine 29 arrived on scene to a vehicle vs. a motorcycle and checked for injuries. Engine 29 provided care for one minor patient and the remainder of the response was cancelled.
TUESDAY, FEB. 25
Battalion Chiefs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Medic 1 and Chief 8 met for monthly BC training on incident command and overhead assignments.
Chief Bray was pinned as a new Deputy Chief. Chief Bray will oversee the day-to-day operations of Stanislaus Consolidated and Oakdale contracts.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 27 attended the academy building construction lecture presented by MFD Captain Stasiowski.
Battalion 5 attended BC training, focusing on multiple alarm fires.
Engines 27, 28 and 29 trained on hose operations and pump training.
