The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Nov. 11 through Monday, Nov. 17. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, NOV. 17
Battalion 2: Crews completed their daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Personnel completed mandatory online training.
Crews attended the MST High Rise training at Station 17.
Battalion 2 completed a BC apparatus orientation and reviewed response procedures with Engine 26.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, and conducted Monday apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Battalion 5 companies rotated through Station 17 for annual High-Rise Training.
7:30 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 29, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to the report of an injury vehicle accident with pin-in at Highway 108 and Lancaster Road. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find one vehicle that went down the embankment and checked for injuries. Engine 28 along with Oak Valley Ambulance cared for one patient with minor injuries and the remainder of the response was cancelled. Engine 28 remained on scene to assist CHP with traffic control.
7 p.m. – Engine 28, Battalion 5 and Modesto Chief 8 responded to an EMS call for a patient who was unresponsive. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find an unresponsive patient who was not breathing and started CPR. Crews along with Oak Valley Ambulance cared for the patient on scene for roughly 40 minutes. The patient regained pulses and was transported to a local hospital for further care.
SUNDAY, NOV. 16
Battalion 2: Crews spent the shift completing the remaining Vector assignments.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 5, along with other MST Battalion Chiefs, trained on command and control at High Rise incidents.
10:52 a.m. – Engine 28 to Crow Road, cross of Milnes Road, for a vehicle fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a vehicle that left the roadway and caught fire. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and locate the driver, who was uninjured. CHP is investigating the crash.
SATURDAY, NOV. 15
Companies conducted criminal MCI training at Ceres High School with Ceres Police Department. Several MST units, including some from Battalion 2 and Battalion 5, trained with PD on how to respond to a mass shooting incident at the school.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 29 trained on large diameter hose line deployment and pumping evolutions.
9:06 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 to East F Street for a potential structure fire, smell of smoke in the laundry room. Crews arrived on scene and found a small fire contained to a clothes dryer. Firefighters secured power to the outlet, removed the unit and ventilated the structure. No extension into the main structure was found.
5:21 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 to Stearns and Sierra for a vehicle accident. While responding, OPD found the accident at Stearns and Twildo. Units arrived at scene with a single vehicle into a tree. Firefighters searched the area for possible patients as the vehicle was unoccupied. OPD remained on scene waiting for a tow truck.
FRIDAY, NOV. 14
The Technical Rescue Companies trained on shoring at the RFTC.
Battalion 2: 11:13 a.m. – Engines 7, 26, and Battalion 2 responded for a natural gas leak inside the garage in the 2600 block of Briarcliff Drive. E26 was the first to arrive and isolated the issue to the water heater in the garage. They were able to secure the gas, and the balance of the response was canceled.
Station 26 had a visit from a three-year-old future firefighter.
Battalion 5: 11:41 a.m. – Engine 28 responded to a two-vehicle accident on G Street in Oakdale. Minor injuries were reported.
THURSDAY, NOV. 13
Deputy Chief Jesberg presented at the Modesto Kiwanis Club monthly membership meeting. The presentation included the history of the Modesto Fire Department, Fire Station 1 update and general discussion on contracts for service.
Battalion 2: Congratulations to firefighters Roger Guerra and Garrett Richey for passing their ten-month testing.
Crews worked on target solutions assignments.
Battalion 5: A group of students from Dennis Earl Elementary School in Turlock was headed up to Knights Ferry for a field trip to hike and do a scavenger hunt, visit the museum, and check out the salmon run in the river. Due to the inclement weather, it was pouring when the bus arrived, the crew at Station 29 became aware and salvaged the kids’ day by giving them a tour of the firehouse and equipment.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 12
Captain Colby hosted a training for the Administrative Chiefs on the new Central Square CAD system that will be going live in December.
The Technical Rescue Companies conducted shoring training at the RFTC.

Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Crews took advantage of the weather and completed yearly hydrant maintenance.
Engine 27, Battalion 5, and Deputy Chief Bray met with local teenager Jett and his family in downtown Oakdale to show support to Jett as he battles cancer. Jett was made an honorary Modesto Fire Department Fire Captain for the day. He got a tour of the City of Oakdale with his mom, sisters and Engineer Byrd, flowed water with Firefighter Mensonides, and helped check the gear on Engine 27. We look forward to Jett and his family joining us for dinner after this round of chemo is complete.
TUESDAY, NOV. 11
On and off duty MFD personnel attended the Modesto Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony at the Gallo Center. Truck 205 displayed the American Flag for the parade.
Battalion 2: Crews completed their daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Personnel completed mandatory online training.
Congratulations to Firefighter Tyler Elks for successfully passing his 10-month probationary test.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, completed mandated Target Solution assignments, and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
9:30 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded to the report of an injury accident at the intersection of River Road and Highway 120. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find a two-vehicle accident at the intersection with one vehicle on its side and the driver pinned in the vehicle. Engine 28 and Engine 27 stabilized the vehicle and extricated the patient within six minutes. The patient suffered minor injuries and was further assessed on scene by Oak Valley Ambulance personnel.
Engine 27, Battalion 5 and Chief 2 participated in the Oakdale Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony to honor our Veterans and First Responders. Thank you to the Oakdale community for such a well-attended event.
