O-R fire calls

The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.

Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Jan. 23 through Monday, Jan. 29. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.

 

MONDAY, JAN. 29

Battalion 2: 12:30 p.m. – Engine 22 responded to an EMS call on B Street in Empire. E22 provided ALS treatment for an adult female with shortness of breath resulting from breathing chloramine gas created by mixing of cleaning chemicals. E22 medic-maintained care through transport to DMC.

E21 pre-fire planned a vacant residence at 220 North Riverside Drive that has been the site of a small fire recently.

Battalion 5: Crews completed apparatus and station maintenance.

Members from Battalion 5 assisted with instructing (wildland) the MST firefighter academy.

 

SUNDAY, JAN. 28

Battalion 2: Station 26 taught some basic firefighter skills during a ride along by subject interested in a fire service career.

Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.

Companies completed station maintenance.

Engine 27 trained with Truck 5 on ground ladders, aerial operations and salvage operations.

Companies trained on salvage, ropes/knots and stokes basket packaging.

8:48 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 29 and Battalion 5 to Orange Blossom Road for a vehicle accident. Crews arrived on scene to find two vehicles involved with the roadway blocked. One person was evaluated for minor injuries and refused transport.

8:52 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, and Battalion 5 to Langworth Road for a vehicle accident. Crews arrived on scene to find one motorcycle rider down with major injuries. Firefighters and Medics started ALS treatment and packaged the patient. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. CHP is investigating.

 

SATURDAY, JAN. 27

Members of the Technical Rescue Team performed quarterly training on high angle rescue at the Riverbank Army Ammo Plant. Training focused on high angle rope rescue set up and pick offs.

Battalion 2: The second round of paramedic students just completed their first week at Sac State and began practicing their techniques.

Battalion 5: 12:08 a.m. – Modesto Engine 28, Stanislaus Engine 26, Modesto Truck 5, and BC5 responded to a potential structure fire in the 1000 block of Wakefield Drive in the City of Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene of a small transient cooking fire inside of a rail car. The responding balance was cancelled.

Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.

Companies completed station maintenance.

Companies trained on scenarios for the upcoming 10-month Probationary Firefighter testing.

Engine 29 trained with Boat 29 on the Stanislaus River.

9:44 p.m. – Engine 7, Engine 26, Truck 5, and Battalion 5 to Cottage Point Drive for a potential structure fire, smell of natural gas inside the residence. Crews arrived on scene to find a chemical smell in the residence. Firefighters used a four-gas monitor to check the atmosphere in the residence. No hazards were found. Crews used fans to ventilate the structure.

 

FRIDAY, JAN. 26

Stations 1, 2, 5 and 27 hosted SR911 dispatcher trainees on a ride-a-long for them to gain experience in day-to-day operations.

Members of the technical rescue team trained at the Riverbank Ammo Plant on high angle rope rescue techniques.

Battalion 2: Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Prevention hosted a training session at Station 22. The subject was engine company business inspections, which will start in February.

 

THURSDAY, JAN. 25

Members of the MST academy began the swift water training portion of the academy in Knights Ferry.

Battalion 5: Modesto Engine 27 and Engine 28’s crews conducted boat operator training on the Stanislaus River.

6:23 p.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, Truck 5, and BC5 responded to a natural gas leak inside a business in the 100 block of North Magg Avenue in the City of Oakdale. Crews arrived and checked the business with the four-gas monitor; there was no smell of natural gas and the monitor did not detect any unsafe environment. Crews cleared the business returned to normal operation.

7 p.m. – Modesto BC5 attended the Knights Ferry Municipal Advisory Committee (MAC) Meeting.

 

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 24

Battalion 2: Chief Bray awarded a Stanislaus Challenge Coin to a citizen rescuer who came to the aid of another citizen having a life-threatening emergency. Engine 21, Engine 22 and BC2 attended the event.

E23 trained on ropes and systems.

Battalion 5: Weekly maintenance and cleaning were performed at station 30.

Engine 28 performed maintenance on the SCBA compressor at station 1.

Personnel from Station 29 assisted the MST academy with water rescue training.

 

TUESDAY, JAN. 23

Battalion 2: Engine 26 trained with a local youth working on his Eagle Scout badge in fire preparedness in Riverbank.

Companies worked on station maintenance and cleaning.

Battalion 5: Crews rotated though chest X rays at Fire Station 17.

Station 27 hosted a local girl scout troop and gave them a station tour.

10:06 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, and BC5 responded to Smith and Workman for a vehicle into a pole. On the scene crews located a single vehicle into a power pole with live wires down. The driver was not hurt, so ground and air ambulance were cancelled. Engine 28 and BC5 stayed on scene to keep the road closed until CHP and PG&E arrived.
