Oakdale police investigating reported animal abandonment

Authorities are investigating the reported illegal abandonment of a trapped cat in the neighborhood of Carmel Ranch Circle, officials said.

The Oakdale Animal Shelter and Oakdale Police Department reminded residents that animal abandonment within the city limits is illegal.

According to officials, leaving an animal in a neighborhood, park, roadway, rural area or outside of any facility is considered abandonment and may result in enforcement action. Anyone who traps a cat is required to surrender the animal to Oakdale Animal Services.

Individuals who abandon animals may face citations, fines, misdemeanor criminal charges and, in some cases, animal cruelty charges depending on the circumstances, officials said.

The shelter advises residents who are unable to care for an animal to use legal alternatives. Animals may be surrendered to a local animal shelter during normal business hours. Oakdale Animal Services can provide guidance on the surrender process. Residents may also contact licensed rescue organizations or use local rehoming resources to seek appropriate placement.

Officials said abandoning an animal creates public safety concerns and places additional strain on community resources.

Anyone wishing to report suspected animal abandonment or animal cruelty is asked to contact the Oakdale Police Department at 209-847-2231.
