Motorists Bracing For Higher Pump Prices

Modesto gas prices have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.43/gallon on Feb. 21, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Gas prices in Modesto are 4.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.09/gallon higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.97/gallon as of Monday, Feb. 21 while the most expensive was $4.99, a difference of $1.02/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.89 while the highest was $6.69, a difference of $2.80/gallon.

“With nuclear talks between Iran and global powers ongoing in Vienna, the possibility exists that a new deal could bring Iran’s crude oil supply back to legitimate markets, helping to ease a slight portion of supply concerns,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “While the proposition remains in the air for the time being, we’re also just a few weeks away from the traditional start of the spring surge in gasoline prices, brought on by the change to summer gasoline, seasonal maintenance at refineries and rising demand.”

The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.51/gallon. The national average is up 20.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 88.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back ten years show the lowest price in Modesto at $1.98 on Feb. 21, 2016 and the highest at $4.00 per gallon on Feb. 21, 2013. Nationwide, the lowest price of the past 10 years on Feb. 21 was $1.71 in 2016; highest was $3.78 in 2013.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.52/gallon, down 1.1 cents per gallon from $4.53; Oakland - $4.77, up 3.9 cents from $4.73; and San Jose - $4.76, up 2.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.74/gallon.
