Congratulations to Knights Ferry’s First Grade class for their Blue Ribbon at the Stanislaus County Science Fair. Honor awards went to the Kindergarten class, Breanna Banks and Dakota Voortman. Jackson Ault and Trexler Porter received Distinguished awards.

The Knights Ferry Post Office was established in 1853, Louis Dent being the first postmaster. Oakdale and Modesto were not in existence. The first Post Office was in the General store. Now Knights Ferry’s Post Office is a sub-station of Oakdale. The historic cancellation stamp cannot be used because all mail must be metered. A bit of our history is gone.

Lee and Mary Sue Shearer have ended their town tours for the summer. This month they guided Mesa Verde (Riverbank) third graders, Knights Ferry third and fourth graders, third graders from Angus Baptist (Modesto), third graders from Turlock and a group of senior citizens from Murphys.

Welcome to the world Remington Lee White, born April 26th to Casey and Kelly Burgoin White. Proud Knights Ferry grandparents are Gary and Deirdre Burgoin.

When Michael McKibban was cleaning the freshly picked beets from their garden he saw something in the sink and called Maureen. It looked like a small snake or worm so he put it in a jar and did some research on the Internet. It was a shovelhead worm or hammerhead worm, Bipalium kewense, a land planarian. They eat earthworms, insects, insect larvae, small snails and slugs. They can reproduce very quickly and can wipe out an entire worm farm population in days! The worms will regenerate into new worms when cut into pieces (remember Planaria in high school Biology) so don’t chop them up. It was very interesting to watch it move about.

It is sad to report that Betty Rogers has passed away. Betty and Bob bought property in the Ferry in 1962 and spent summers with the girls, Sally and Robin, on the river. In 1980 the Ferry became their permanent home. Services will be Saturday at the Oakdale Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m. Burial is at Knights Ferry’s Oak Grove Cemetery.
