On September 3, 1862, Knights Ferry won the election for the Stanislaus County seat against La Grange. There was only a 100-vote difference and Knights Ferry remained the county seat for nearly a decade. At one time, what we recognize as the dirt plaza or parking lot, stood a courthouse with offices and a jail on the west side of town. It was a multilevel building that was also home to a hotel. With the expansion of the railroad, Modesto’s population had grown and on September 6, 1871, Knights Ferry lost the election for Stanislaus County seat to Modesto. It’s hard to imagine “little” Knights Ferry holding such an official position nearly 150 years ago!
