The Knights Ferry Cemetery had its annual Spring Clean-Up. The Calderon family worked several weekends to make sure it was in tip-top shape for Memorial Day weekend! The members of the Odd Fellows Stanislaus Lodge placed American flags on the graves of Veterans in our historic cemetery.

On Memorial Day weekend our local fire department was in the right place at the right time! The Knights Ferry Fire Department building, Station 29, is staffed by Modesto Fire and includes a paramedic. They were working on a training exercise when they saw at first what appeared to be a log floating in the ice cold water but when it got closer, they realized it was an unconscious adult. The crew sprang into action and because a paramedic was present, they were able to provide advanced life support measures. The person was resuscitated and is alive today because of the quick-thinking crew at Station 29. It was a testament to the importance of staffing Station 29 24/7 and with a paramedic! Thank you to our first responders!

Knights Ferry School had four eighth grade graduates on May 29 at 7pm. Jasper Davis, Angelina Hyde, Xochitl Lau-Vargas, and Jeremy Ryan sat poised in their royal blue graduation cap and gown while the entire school, and the graduates’ families celebrated and wished them well in High School. Jeremy Ryan was presented with the Cameron Schlicht award. The Cameron Schlicht award is presented to the eighth grader who exemplifies encouragement and kindness. Jeremy’s name will be added to a special plaque with the year he was recognized. The eighth grade graduates each had a special poster area where they showed off pictures of them growing up and of course, a special spot for gifts. Congratulations to the graduates!

Dr. Janet Lindgren or Dr. J announced her retirement after the completion of this school year. Dr. J has been here since my children were in school and she has walked through some very challenging years at Knights Ferry and done her best to keep Knights Ferry School at its best! Best of luck in your retirement Dr. J; thank you for all that you have done for the school!

My first Knights Ferry News article was August 3, 2017 so I suppose that means I’ve been writing the Knights Ferry News for nearly eight years. It feels like a lifetime ago and boy, has my life changed! In 2017, both of my children were in school and living at home, I was still a stay-at-home mom and volunteered everywhere in the community. Fast forward to 2025 and Jason and I are empty-nesters, I’m working as a registered nurse, and we recently moved out of Knights Ferry (not too far away)! It’s been incredible to be an adult and raise children in the same small town that I grew up in. I love Knights Ferry and one of the reasons I enjoyed writing the Knights Ferry News was to keep the sweet memories of Knights Ferry alive for the future generations, the ones that may not mean that much to the rest of the world but mean the world to some of us who live in the area. The community that we have is so special and it means the world to me to try to document as much as we can in the Knights Ferry News. For a while, I didn’t think people really read my article but I have had so many people meet me and tell me how much they love reading the Knights Ferry News and of course, there was one week I didn’t get it into Marg on time (completely my fault) and boy, did I hear about it from some of the locals! I am forever grateful to the Oakdale Leader editor, Marg. I am not a professional writer and Marg was there to help me along the way!

This week will be my last article and next week a new reporter duo will be writing the Knights Ferry News! Mary Turner and Sydney Turner will be taking it on and bringing new ideas and fresh perspectives! I am excited because they share the same affection for the town and all the people in it.
