November 9, 1849 marked a historic day in the early history of Knights Ferry.
William Knight, a frontiersman and trader (and some say physician) established a ferry across the Stanislaus River to serve Gold Rush travelers heading to the foothills. Later that same year, he was killed under mysterious circumstances – some say shot, others claim stabbed in his sleep.
Knight was buried on the hill in front of what is now the Masonic Lodge, his grave unmarked. More than 175 years later, his name and story remain an enduring part of the town he founded beside the river.
