I’d like to thank a reader who reached out with an important historical clarification. In my article for the week of January 14th I wrote about the Great Flood that occurred on January 11, 1862. Don Shuper, whose family has been in Knights Ferry since the 1800’s, sent in the following clarification regarding the floods destruction:
“It was not a bridge - but a general ‘store’ near the Palm tree at Two Mile Bar that washed away. For years the local history claimed that there was a safe in the store with some gold in it which went along with the store but was never found. There may still be some foundation remnants near the tree.
Two Mile Bar was so named since it was a normally shallow part of the river which wagons and horses could cross - and so named because it was about 2 miles above Knights Ferry.
How do I know this - well it was my great great ( great ) grandfather on my mother’s side Lewis Williams who established a ‘store’ at Two Mile Bar.
My mother was Elizabeth Lucille Williams and my father of course was Milan Elmer Shuper and my brother was Miles Lewis Shuper.
We used to have a few accounting books from the ‘store’ with fantastic beautiful handwriting.” – Don Shuper
Thanks again to Don for this clarification. We’d love to share your own family history or memories from years past with the community. If you have something you’d like to contribute, please email me at knightsferrynews@gmail.com
