Spring is almost here and with the recent rains, the grass is green and the blossoms are full and it is a great time to get out there and play. That includes getting in some pickleball, a popular activity, as demonstrated by the full courts at the recently opened Greger Sports Park in Oakdale.
A formal ribbon cutting ceremony for the sports park took place on Monday, March 3 at 10 a.m.
The park itself, being done in phases, has been under construction for the last couple of years and with the installation of a tennis court, two soccer fields along with several pickleball courts already completed, the construction of a gymnasium will begin soon. Several city officials, community leaders and representatives from the project’s main contractor, George Reed, Inc. were in attendance at the ribbon cutting.
“It’s so nice to have these courts here so thank you for your help with this,” resident Kevin Keller told City Manager Bryan Whitemyer following the ribbon cutting.
He also wished Whitemyer well, as he is leaving Oakdale to take over as City Manager in Folsom.
For his part, Whitemyer said he is grateful to have spent the majority of his life here in Oakdale as well as serving a good portion of his career in the community that he grew up in. Seeing these projects move forward has been a great source of pride for Whitemyer and community leaders, especially when they see just how many people are enjoying the fields and courts at the Greger Sports Park.
As Whitemyer noted: “With the growth and development of our community, we also have many opportunities to add beneficial things such as parks and recreation centers.”
