Winter Sports Squads Heat Up For Valley Oak League Play

The 2019-2020 Valley Oak League winter sports season is officially upon us, as Oakdale High school teams gear up for the start of league play.

Girls basketball tips off their VOL season at home on Thursday, Jan. 2 when they welcome in East Union. Freshmen start the day off with a 4 p.m. tip off time. The freshman team is coached by Josh Martin. Following the conclusion of the freshmen game, the junior varsity will take the court. Cheri Martin is the coach for the JV girls. Oakdale’s varsity caps off the night with 7 p.m. start time. Julie Ford returns as head coach of the team.

The boys basketball teams take the court on Thursday, Jan. 2 in their league opener as they will do battle with East Union on the road. The freshmen begin their season at 4 p.m. under new head coach Brian Bohannon. Junior varsity takes the court at 5:30 p.m., with Kelly Power back as head coach of the team. Hondo Arpoika and Charles Legan lead the varsity team and they are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip off time.

Oakdale’s wrestlers look to continue their long reign of supremacy in the VOL. The first VOL duals for the Mustangs will take place at East Union on Jan. 15 but the grapplers will be at Clovis High School for the Doc Buchanan Invitational on Jan. 3 and 4. Other members of the team will be in Escalon for the Lloyd C. Engel Tournament that same weekend. Oakdale wrestling is coached by Steve Strange and his staff.

Grace Fernandes returns as head coach of the varsity girls soccer team. Oakdale began their league play in mid-December but return to action on Jan. 6 at Sierra. Game time is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Joe Micheletti is the junior varsity coach and they play at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6.

Oakdale’s boys soccer team returns to league play on Thursday, Jan. 9 at Weston Ranch. Alfredo Quiroga is the head coach for the varsity team and they play at 5:45 p.m. while Jaime Martinez returns to coach the junior varsity team and they play at 4 p.m.
