Oakdale’s varsity boys and girls water polo teams made the postseason and for the boys, they got wins in their first two rounds. The girls took an opening round loss on Nov. 4.

Head coach Jared Kahler said the varsity boys hosted Beyer on Nov. 5 and won that opening round contest by a 12-4 final.

“That advanced them to the quarterfinals against Bear River of Grass Valley. That game was on November 7,” Kahler explained. “The boys won that game 12-6 and now advance to the D3 Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals.”

Oakdale was due to travel to face the top seed, Roseville High School, on Nov. 12 at West Park High School in Roseville, looking to move on to the finals.

“The girls lost in the first round of the playoffs against Beyer High School with a score of 12-8, so their season has come to a close,” said Kahler.

Kahler said the home games for the boys had a little something extra, as both the cheer squad and the OHS drumline put in appearances.

Football Playoffs

Following their regular season finale loss to Manteca on Oct. 31 at home, Oakdale turned its attention to the postseason.

The Mustangs, with a 5-1 record (second place) in the Valley Oak League and 8-2 overall, earned the number two seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 bracket. Eight teams will enter the tournament in hopes of winning a blue banner. The Mustangs will host number seven Ponderosa in the opening round of the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 14. Ponderosa was 6-4 overall this season, 3-3 in their league. Kickoff at The Corral is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Other first round match ups in the tournament include top seed Woodcreek hosting number eight Destiny Christian Academy, number three Merced hosting number six Vanden and number four Vacaville hosting number five Rio Americano.

A win on Friday night would move Oakdale to the semifinal round on Friday, Nov. 21 against the winner of the Merced-Vanden match.

The D3 championship game is scheduled for Nov. 28 at Sacramento City College with a 4 p.m. kickoff time.

Cross Country

Heading to Frogtown at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Nov. 8 for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section cross country meet, it was a successful trip for the running Mustangs.

Both the varsity boys and varsity girls qualified to the Section finals.

For the varsity girls, it was a second-place team finish on the three-mile course.

Individual runners for Oakdale and their placements were: sophomore Addison Wylie, 14th, 19:34; freshman Tenley Wylie, 21st, 20:49; junior Kylie Fast, 24th, 20:56; junior Taylor Reams, 27th, 21:01; senior Bradie Evans, 31st, 21:22; senior Jordan Wylie, 42nd, 22:09; and junior Zeidy Cornejo, 44th, 22:14. There were 134 total runners in the race.

The varsity boys took third place overall as a team on the three-mile course, with 183 runners in that competition. Oakdale’s individual efforts were as follows: senior Sean Muturi, 14th, 16:51; junior Weston McGhee, 17th, 16:53; senior Mitchell Benning, 30th, 17:37; freshman Aden Cavanaugh, 36th, 17:42; sophomore Trevor Powell, 41st, 17:48; senior Jesus Covarrubias, 43rd, 17:53; sophomore Roman Moreno, 49th, 18:02.

“We wanted to qualify for section finals and not to overdo it and that is exactly what we did,” head coach guy Fowler said. “We got an injured runner back, we had a runner not run (Saturday) because of an injury and we are dealing with some illnesses. With all that, we should be at full strength at the section finals and hopefully finish in the top three as a team.”

The top three teams at the section meet qualify for the state championship meet.

“The boys are looking to qualify for state for the fifth year in a row and the girls are looking to return to state for the first time since 2021,” added Fowler.

The section final will be hosted at Folsom High School on Saturday, Nov. 15.
