Six games, six wins for the Oakdale High School varsity boys basketball team adds up to a hot start for the Mustangs. To put it in perspective, Oakdale won a total of 10 games during the entire season in 2017. The latest team to fall to the Mustangs was the Escalon Cougars on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Mustangs (6-0) picked up the road win 66-52. Freshman guard Kobe Nunes scored a game high 32 points for the Mustangs including a three-point buzzer beater in the first quarter to give Oakdale a 21-19 lead. Seconds later he scored on a corner three to start the second quarter.

Senior guard John Foreman finished the game with 11 points, including a strong performance in the second quarter. Foreman scored on a fast break layup with 4:51 remaining in the half to give Oakdale a 35-24 advantage. Less than two minutes later Foreman overpowered the Cougars down low inside the paint for an offensive rebound and put back to extend the lead to 37-26.

“We struggled in the first quarter, but following a timeout we started focusing on our game. Coaches had a game plan and we feel like we executed that today,” said Foreman.

Oakdale led 48-29 at the half.

On the defensive side of the court six foot-three inch senior center Sam Medlin punished the Cougars down low as the big man had four blocks, and pulled down 11 rebounds. Medlin and the Mustangs held off the Cougars’ scoring attack early in the third quarter, where the home team’s first field goal of the half came with 3:36 left in the third quarter and held them to just six points in the third quarter. Medlin scored the final points of the third quarter and finished the game with eight points.

Earlier in the week Oakdale picked up an 87-54 road win over Livingston and a 76-53 home win over Tokay on Wednesday, Nov. 28. In the home win sophomore Jonah Norman scored a game high 20 points, Nunes added 18 and Foreman scored 13.
