Three Oakdale High School throwers competed in the 2019 CIF Track and Field State Championship on Saturday, May 25. The event was held at Buchannan High School. Oakdale was represented by Ben Chappell, Emma Harper and Angelica Lowry.

Chappell, a junior, placed 17th overall in the boy’s discus event. He threw for 150 feet even. Gino Cruz of Newbury Park placed first with a massive throw of 195 feet even. Chappell earned his spot in the competition by placing first at Masters when he set a personal record of 155-11.

Harper, a sophomore, placed 16th overall in girl’s discus when she threw for a total of 131-03. She punched her ticket to the state meet by placing first at Masters where she threw for 135-10. Earning first in discus at the state meet was Jocelynn Budwig of Fowler High School, with a throw of 160-04.

Lowry finished in 20th place in the girl’s shot put at the state meet. Lowry, a junior, threw for 38-02.75. To qualify for the event, she placed third overall and set a personal record at Masters with a throw of 39-10.5.

“They held their composure and competed well,” said Mustangs throwing coach Brett Chappell. “The goal was to give themselves a chance to make day two of the competition. Unfortunately, when you compete with the best in the state that doesn’t always work out.”

All three competitors were first time qualifiers for the state championship.

“They are all underclassmen and are excited to come back next year,” noted the coach. “This is the most individuals the track team has taken to state ever which is a great accomplishment as a group.”
