It was a busy week for Oakdale High School athletes, as they returned to classes and also jumped in to Valley Oak league action. Soccer and basketball teams, for boys and girls, had their league openers.

The soccer Mustangs began their regular season play this past week.

Oakdale High School’s varsity boys and girls teams each hosted a match on the OHS campus. On Thursday night, Jan. 4 the boys hosted Kimball on the football field, known as The Corral. Oakdale struggled against the Jaguars as Kimball won the match 4-0. In the first half, Oakdale trailed 3-0 but had an opportunity late to get on the board. However, an offsides penalty negated a header goal by Dylan Krause. The Mustangs regrouped in the second half and only allowed one goal over the final 40 minutes but could not get one in the net themselves.

Following The Leader press time, Oakdale traveled to Manteca to face Sierra on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Oakdale’s next contest will be on the road against East Union on Thursday, January 11 at 6:15 p.m.

For the Lady Mustangs, Oakdale tied with Kimball on Friday night, Jan. 5, ending the game at 1-1. It was a home game inside The Corral. Down 1-0 at the break, the varsity girls tied the contest on a goal by Kyleigh Melconian, assisted by Mia Peterson. Monday night, Jan. 8 Oakdale was scheduled to take on Sierra in a road contest. This showdown took place following The Leader’s sports press time. Wednesday, Jan. 10 Oakdale will face off against East Union in Manteca at 6:15 p.m.

The 2024 Valley Oak League season tipped off this past week for both the Oakdale High School boys and girls basketball programs. Following a 79-40 home loss to West Park to close out the preseason on Wednesday, Jan. 3, the boys returned to the court on Friday, Jan. 5 where they hosted Manteca. The Buffaloes defeated the Mustangs 52-26.

In the game, Oakdale had an 11-point effort from Jacob Cavanaugh. Oakdale will host Central Catholic on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The busy week continues as the boys travel to Manteca to face East Union on Friday night, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and host Enochs in a non-league game on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.

The varsity Lady Mustangs fell to Manteca in their league opener by a final score of 51-30. The home contest took place on Thursday night, Jan. 4. Oakdale looked to rebound against Kimball in a road game on Tuesday, Jan. 9 following The Leader’s sports press time. Oakdale will then host Sierra on Thursday evening, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
