Members of the Valley Oak League champion Mustang golf team played at Bing Maloney Golf Course in Sacramento, a par 72 course, on May 9. It was the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs and the Mustangs finished ninth overall with a team score of 436. Winning team was Vista Del Lago with a team score of 363. Oakdale was tops among the VOL teams competing. Kimball came in at number 10 with a 438 and East Union finished 13th with a team score of 466.
“Our team did not qualify to move on to the next level of playoffs. We did have one player, freshman Nolan Harris, qualify by shooting a one over par 73,” said head coach Lee McGhee. “In his first year competing at the high school level, he played extremely well and was only one over par on the day. All around great play and being able to score just one over par shows his strength of play in all categories.”
Along with the 73 shot by Harris, Oakdale golfers included Cooper Pitney 84, Grant Weber 87, Carson Middaugh 93, Robert Bordona 99 and Devyn Scott 99, for the team score of 436.
“He said he ‘chipped and putted the ball really well’ during the round at Bing Maloney,” McGhee added of Harris. “Everything starts with getting yourself in position off the tee and one of his many strengths on the course is getting the ball in the fairway off the tee. When you are hitting open shots to the greens and able to be in position it really helps you out. I am impressed with how well Nolan played this whole season; MVP of the VOL and now moving on to the next round of playoffs in his first season out here, shows his dedication to practicing and the strength of his golf game.”
Harris finished fifth overall and qualified individually for the Masters Tournament to be held at Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton on Monday, May 16.
