Thirteen different varsity Mustangs scored in the team’s 69-29 home basketball win over Johansen on Friday night, Dec. 7. With the win Oakdale is now 9-0 on the season. The host squad leaped out to a 19-5 advantage after the first quarter and never slowed down. Jon Foreman led the team in scoring with 17 points and Michael Echavarria added 12 points on shooting four three-point field goals.

“This was a big win for us, it wasn’t that long ago where we were on the other side of the scoreboard, so to start the season off this way is a giant step in the right direction,” said Echavarria.

The Mustangs took a 36-15 lead into the half. In the third quarter center Sam Medlin got the crowd on their collective feet when Jeff Crowley stole the ball and dished it to Medlin for a two hand dunk to give Oakdale a 49-20 advantage with 2:37 left in the third.

“Jeff stole the ball and when he passed it to me I knew I could finish strong,” said Medlin following the game.

Earlier in the week Oakdale defeated Atwater on the 59-52. Medlin had 17 points and 17 rebounds in the game and three others also scored in double digits. Foreman had 16 points and both Evan Brush and Jonah Norman each had 11 for Oakdale. Down late in the third, Oakdale rallied to tie the game at 39 after three quarters. Oakdale used the long ball to defeat Atwater as Brush, Norman and Foreman all connected from three-point range.

On Monday, Dec. 10 the boys traveled to Tuolumne to take on Summerville following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale continues to play on the road when they travel to Hughson on Thursday and Friday night the boys will be back at home to host Merced.

The junior varsity team went 2-0 this week with wins over Johansen and Atwater. The team defeated Atwater 45-40 behind Jason Rawe’s 15 points and Kaleb McDonald’s 10 points. Rawe posted 15 points in the team’s victory over Johansen and McDonald added a dozen. Nine Mustangs scored in the game and Zach Aloisio also scored in double digits with 11. The team built up a 35-19 halftime lead and held Johansen to just six total points in the second half.

Freshmen also found the winning formula as they went unbeaten this past week. Oakdale’s frosh boys defeated Atwater 59-30 as Jackson Holt scored 17 points. Against Johansen Oakdale won 65-22.
