Mustangs Corral Trio Of Wins In Tennis, Golf, Cross Country

Oakdale High School season one sports were back in action this past week. Boys tennis, girls golf and cross country all earned wins.

 

TENNIS

On Friday, March 12 the boys tennis team traveled to Escalon to take on the Cougars. Oakdale won the match in decisive fashion; 6-1. It was a clean sweep in singles action for the Mustangs. Jimmy Homer defeated Eli Lattig 7-5, 5-7, 10-4. Aiden Rodrigues defeated Dylan Criteser 6-3, 6-0. Ethan Dingu defeated Joshua Schut 7-5, 6-3. Ryan Krause defeated Michael Baptista 6-1, 6-0. Carson Stueve defeated Nikolai Lorenzo 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles Oakdale’s Hunter Olsen and Jacob Sponsel fell to Eli Lattig and Dylan Criteser 2-6, 2-6. Trevin Brown and Jaden Lebsack knocked off Michael Baptista and Nikolai Lorenzo 6-3, 7-5.

Oakdale’s season continues this week. Tuesday, March 16 the team was scheduled to travel to Manteca to face Sierra following The Leader’s press time. Thursday, March 18 the team will travel to Modesto to face Central Catholic at 3:30 p.m.

 

GOLF

The Lady Mustang golfers picked up a pair of wins this past week as they defeated both East Union and Ripon Christian. Tuesday, March 9 the team hosted East Union and defeated the Lady Lancers, 229-251. Tori Blanc led the team shooting a 39. Kalie Parola shot 42, Shealyn Hanrahan 43, Meghan McCluney 50, Makena Mendonca 55 and Janelle Velazquez 56. Oakdale not only defeated the Lancers but also overcame the elements. High winds and heavy rain started to fall towards the end of the match. The next day Oakdale took on Ripon Christian at Jack Tone Golf Course. Par was 31 and Hanrahan was two over at 33; Blanc was +4 (35); Parola 45, Velazquez 52 and Alivia Antinetti shot 53. Monday, March 15 the girls were scheduled to host a tournament following The Leader’s press time.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

After a week off, the cross country team returned to action. On the road Oakdale defeated Escalon at all three levels. In a three-mile race the varsity girls improved to 3-0 with a 15-45 win. Haleigh Humble took first place at 20:06. Second and third place went to Kassidy Fmura and Hannah Beth Norman as they both crossed the line at the same time of 21:22. Fourth place finisher was Kali Jericoff at 21:38.

Varsity boys also improved to 3-0 this season as they won 15-45. It was a close three-mile race as the top four finishers crossed the line less than three seconds from each other. Dominic Robles and Caleb Cavanaugh crossed the finish line at the same time at 17:23. Third place went to Dax Daley at 17:25 and fourth place went to Simon Appel at 17:26.

For the frosh/soph boys in a two-mile race it was Mason Oliveira taking first at 11:36. Nathan Luca placed second at 11:43. Jackson Oliveira placed third at 12:13 and Alex Martinez placed fourth at 12:28. The final score was 15-45.

“We are getting better and better every week,” said coach Guy Fowler. “We had to run in a little mud today, but it did not slow us down. We are looking forward to our last home meet.”

Wednesday, March 17 is the final home meet of the season as they take on East Union at 3:30 p.m.
