Oakdale High School season one athletics competed this past week in cross country, boys tennis and girls golf. As the season winds down, the Mustangs look to finish the campaign strong.
CROSS COUNTRY
Wednesday, March 17 Oakdale cross country competed in a home meet against East Union. In a three-mile race, the varsity girls improved to 4-0 on the season with a 15-45 win over the Lancers. Oakdale dominated the race as it took each of the top five places. Kassidy Fmura and Haleigh Humble crossed the finish line at the exact same time to take first and second place at 22:54. Six seconds later Kali Jericoff finished in third place. Angelica Elizondo and Kaili Jericoff crossed the finish line at the same time at 23:24 to place fourth and fifth. The varsity boys suffered their first loss of the season and it came to the defending Sac Joaquin Section Division III champion Lancers; 27-29. Caleb Cavanaugh finished the three-mile race at 15:28 to claim second place. Dominic Robles placed fourth overall at 15:56. Dax Daley rounded out the top five at 16:30. Simon Appel placed sixth at 16:50 and Mason Oliveira finished in 11th at 17:46.
“The whole varsity team ran remarkable; you could not have asked for more,” said coach Guy Fowler.
The freshman/sophomore team won 15-45 to improve to 4-0 on the year. In their two-mile race Oakdale claimed five of the top six spots in the win. Alex Martinez took first place honors at 12:07. Khriztian Escalante placed third at 12:54. Carlos Martinez placed fourth overall, Alejandro Felix placed fifth and Ean Sweeney captured sixth.
This week the team is at Stouffer Park in Ripon to face both Ripon Christian and Weston Ranch.
BOYS TENNIS
The boys tennis team improved to 5-0 after knocking off Sierra 6-2 on Tuesday, March 16 in Manteca. In singles Oakdale went 4-2 on the day. Jimmy Homer fell to Quentin Banks 0-6, 0-6. Aiden Rodrigues defeated David Martin 6-1, 6-4. Ethan Dingu lost to Zach Van Swaizenberg 1-6, 2-6. Ryan Krause made short work of David Nasser 6-0, 6-1. Carson Stueve defeated Aaron Crawford in a marathon contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Hunter Olsen defeated Harri Chandran 6-2, 6-4. It was a clean sweep in doubles action for the Mustangs. Jacob Sponsel and Jeremiah Janssen defeated Robin and David Whatman 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 13-11. Jaden Lebsack and Niel Ongkingco defeated Max Perez and Derek McGuire 6-0, 6-3. Neither team fielded a third doubles team. Thursday, March 25 Oakdale travels to Manteca to take on the Buffaloes at 3:30 p.m.
GIRLS GOLF
Oakdale’s golf girls hosted teams from the Valley Oak League on Monday, March 15 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Oakdale placed second overall with a team score of 244, just behind winner Ripon at 232. East Union fielded a score of 250 and Escalon placed fourth at 252. Sierra rounded out the top five at 274. Kimball (305) and Ripon Christian (339) also competed. Central Catholic and Manteca did not have a complete team. Each team played in their own group and no teams overlapped, as each school was 30 minutes apart from each other in tee times.
