Mustang Freshman, JV Teams Earn Grid Wins

Starting off a busy night inside The Corral on Friday, Aug. 30, both the freshman and junior varsity football teams hosted and defeated Liberty.

The freshmen defeated Liberty 35-21 while the JV also earned a victory over the Lions, 28-12.

After trailing 7-0 early, the freshman team did not break or panic. Running back Chris Thompson scored on a seven-yard rush to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. In the second quarter Oakdale scored on a 19-yard rush by Carlos Baez to go up 14-7. This would be the only score of the quarter and Oakdale entered halftime up 14-7.

In the third quarter Thompson showed his power and speed as he plowed through Liberty defenders and outran the Lions for a 65-yard touchdown to go up 21-7 with 8:37 remaining. Liberty answered with a quick touchdown of their own to cut the deficit to 21-14 with 6:08 remaining. The young Mustang Ponies did not get discouraged by the response by the Lions and scored on their next possession as Jace Rau scored from 16 yards out to go up 28-14 with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Oakdale extended their advantage to 35-14 on a three yard rush by Devin Rowe. Liberty scored the final points of the game with under a minute left to play. This Thursday night the frosh boys host Hughson as the preseason continues.

The junior varsity found success on the ground as the boys galloped past the Lions. Jose Torres scored within the first minute on an 11-yard rush to go up 7-0 with 9:17 left in the first quarter. Liberty scored early in the second quarter but the point after touchdown was no good resulting in a 7-6 game. Dion Suarez scored two touchdowns to help Oakdale pull away from the visitors. With the score 21-6 late in the third Suarez ran for another score on a 77 yard touchdown run to give Oakdale a 28-6 advantage. Liberty scored the final points of the game to result in the final score of 28-12.

Defensively Suarez and Jake Kettering each had interceptions. Hunter Olsen and Dalton Vargas each had a sack in the win. This Friday night the boys head to Aptos High School for non-league action.
