On Saturday, Nov. 5, a day when Oakdale Mustang alumnae Kayden Legan and Haleigh Humble helped the California State University, Stanislaus cross country team win the CCAA Conference title, the Oakdale Mustang varsity boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section meet with outstanding performances at the Sac-Joaquin Section, Division III sub-section meet at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, also known as Frogtown.

The Mustang boys’ team, still ranked number one in California for Division III schools, won the sub-section title finishing first among the 20 teams entered, some 51 points ahead of second place Ponderosa High School. There were 188 runners in the boys’ 3-mile race, and Mustang harriers took five out of the top 14 places. Leading the way was junior Omar Alsaidi (15 minutes, 46 seconds), who finished third overall and senior Caleb Cavanaugh, the defending sub-section champion, who finished fourth in the same time of 15:46. Junior Jackson Oliveira (15:51) finished eighth, followed by the Valley Oak League champion, senior Dax Daley (15:55) who finished 12th, and sophomore Jacob Cavanaugh (16:08) who finished 14th.

The girls’ team, once again led by senior Kassidy Fmura who finished second overall in 18 minutes, 31 seconds, placed fifth out of the 17 teams entered to also qualify for Saturday’s Sac Joaquin Section championships at Folsom High School. Sophomore Ava Calandro (20:12) finished 23rd overall, sophomore Audri Scott (20:57) finished 35th overall, senior Karina Verduzco (21:25) finished 42nd and senior Anna Nalder (22:26) finished 66th out of the 142 women entered in the 3-mile event.

Head coach Guy Fowler was very satisfied with the results.

“We ran extremely well and accomplished our goals without any injuries,” commented Fowler. “Qualifying for the California State championships is next week and both teams are ready to give it their best effort. The boys’ team has a real shot at repeating as section champions. We just need to stay healthy and get some good training in this week.”
