Volleyball Squads See Mixed Results In League Action

The varsity girls began their Valley Oak League season on a strong note, earning a 3-2 road win over Sierra in the league opener. Oakdale won the first set 25-14 before Sierra evened the series with a 29-27 win of their own. The Lady Mustangs then answered back with a 25-15 set number three to take a 2-1 advantage. Sierra then evened the series at two sets each with a 25-17 fourth set victory. In the fifth and final set Oakdale ended the dramatic night with a 15-5 victory.

Alyssa Cogburn tallied 33 assists and five aces for Oakdale. Kailee Whorton delivered nine aces and 24 digs in the win. Jodie Whitley added a dozen kills and Grace Verdegaal came away with nine kills. Caroline Hamilton held her own on the defensive side with three blocks.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13 the girls hosted their home opener against Manteca in which the Buffaloes won 3-1. Oakdale won the first set 25-20, but then fell in three straight to the visitors.

Oakdale traveled to take on Kimball (7-4, 2-0) on Monday, Sept. 18 following The Leader’s press time. The Lady Mustangs are currently in fourth place in the Valley Oak League standings (3-7, 1-1). Oakdale looks to jump higher in the standings when they face off with East Union (1-5, 0-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at home and Weston Ranch (7-3, 0-2) on Monday, Sept. 25. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

In junior varsity action the girls won both of their matchups to start Valley Oak League play off with a 2-0 record. Ashton Pena helped lift the girls to a 25-23, 25-19 victory over Sierra on Monday, Sept. 11. Pena had nine assists and five kills for Oakdale. Iraith Garcia finished with five aces. Two days later the girls took a 25-20, 25-17 home win over Manteca. Madelyn Stueve finished with a dozen digs for Oakdale. Pena added five kills and three aces, and Jensen Perry contributed with three aces. Oakdale took on Kimball on Monday, Sept. 18. They will play host to East Union today, Wednesday Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

 

FRESHMEN

The freshman volleyball girls also started their year off 2-0 with victories over Sierra (25-15, 19-25, 15-6) and Manteca (25-8, 25-17). Oakdale hosts East Union on Wednesday, Sept. 20 with the frosh match scheduled for 4 p.m.
