Varsity Lady Mustangs Take Two Of Three

A strong offensive week propelled the Oakdale Lady Mustangs varsity soccer team into the playoff hunt. Winning two of three Valley Oak League contests has the Lady Mustangs currently in fifth place in the Valley Oak League standings.

This past week the Lady Mustangs (6-5-0, 2-3-0) played three league games beginning with an 8-2 road win over Lathrop (3-5-2, 0-4-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 9. In the big road win, Talia Millard scored three goals and added an assist. Kassy Rodriguez had identical numbers with three goals and an assist. Daniela de la Riva and Brianna Montoya each had a goal in the win. The Lady Mustangs never trailed in the contest and scored four goals in each half. On the defensive side of the ball Kylee Black made a big impact as she shut down the 2016 VOL Most Valuable Player.

“Kylee Black played amazing defense and helped us in a big way tonight,” said head coach Grace Fernandes.

Oakdale followed up with a 6-1 home win over Weston Ranch (3-11-2, 0-4-1). The Lady Mustangs took the lead early and did not let up. Black scored a game high two goals in the win and added an assist. Madeline Freitas, Irma Torrecillas, Rodriguez and Krissy Lolonis all had one goal each. Torrecillas, Black, Lolonis and Montoya each had an assist; while Sara Velasquez had a game high two assists.

In a makeup game from Jan. 2, the team hosted East Union (10-3-0, 5-0) on Saturday, Jan. 13. The girls trailed 3-1 at the break and fell 4-2 in the home game. In the first half Lolonis found Rodriguez for a goal. In the second half Montoya connected with Millard for the team’s lone second half score.

Four straight road games are on tap for the Lady Mustangs. Tuesday, Jan. 16 the girls began their road trip at Tracy to face the Kimball Jaguars (2-12-1, 1-3-0) following The Leader’s press time. Thursday, Jan. 18 the girls travel to Modesto to take on Central Catholic (10-6-1, 2-2-0). The week concludes at Manteca as the varsity girls take on the Buffaloes (11-4-0, 3-1-0). All games are scheduled for a 5:45 p.m. start.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

A shutout home win for the JV soccer girls against Weston Ranch came on Thursday, Jan. 11 as they defeated the Cougars 1-0. The goal was scored by Lauren Schniekert. No other scores or stats were reported by The Leader’s press time.
