Varsity Lady Mustangs Finish Busy Week With Win

In a week that saw a trio of Valley Oak League games for the Oakdale Lady Mustang basketball program, the girls went 1-2. On Tuesday, Jan. 16 the girls fell to Manteca 48-47 at home. Thursday the girls went to Sierra and lost 57-45 but they finished the week out on a strong note with a 42-39 road win over Central Catholic on Saturday.

In their home loss to Manteca, the varsity team started off strong with senior guard Sarah Bohrer scoring 12 of the team’s 15 first quarter points. The sharpshooting co-captain finished with 17 points. Oakdale (9-9, 2-4) took a 38-28 lead into the fourth quarter and went up 45-40 with 3:53 remaining. Clinging to a 47-46 lead with less than 22 seconds left co-captain Grace Higle went up for the rebound and landed on the ground, however the official ruled it traveling as Higle fell to the ground with 17 seconds left. Manteca capitalized on the turnover and scored on a quick lay-up to take the 48-47 lead with 10.9 seconds remaining. In the final seconds Oakdale had two shot attempts near the hoop but could not get the win over Manteca (13-7, 5-2).

Higle scored 22 points against Sierra (8-12, 1-6) in the road loss and Carley Maaske scored nine points against the Timberwolves. The Lady Mustangs regrouped and knocked off Central Catholic (10-9, 2-5) Saturday night. Higle led the team with 18 points and Bohrer added a dozen in the road win. Oakdale did not score in the first quarter but put in a 23 point third quarter to rally for the win.

“We have great leadership from our captains, which leads to a never quit attitude from the team,” said head coach Julie Ford.

The Lady Mustangs hosted East Union (9-8, 3-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 23 following The Leader’s press time. Thursday, Jan. 25 the Lady Mustangs will host Weston Ranch (4-16, 1-6). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

The JV girls took two-of-three this past week. The girls fell to Manteca 45-43, committing 21 turnovers. Oakdale bounced back with a pair of wins as they beat Sierra behind 14 points from Kendra Branch.

Branch continued to have a big week as she scored 18 points and had 10 steals against Central Catholic on Saturday. Jazmin Martinez had five rebounds and four steals off the bench. The girls hosted East Union on Tuesday night following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale will host Weston Ranch Thursday night with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

 

FRESHMEN

Two games were on the schedule this past week for the young Lady Mustangs. A home loss to Manteca was followed up by a 35-28 road loss to Sierra. Madison Jones and Macie Gregory each scored ten points in the road loss. Oakdale hosted East Union on Tuesday, Jan. 23 following The Leader’s press time and will host Weston Ranch on Thursday at 4 p.m.
