Tournament Play For Pair Of Lady Mustang Squads

The end of the regular season saw the Lady Mustangs golf and tennis clubs headed out to the greens and the court in their respective Valley Oak League Tournaments this past week.

 

GOLF

Oakdale packed their golf bags and went to Swenson Park Golf Course for the 2015 Valley Oak League Tournament on Monday, Oct. 19. The girls finished fifth in the tournament with a score of 495. Freshman Taylor Stewart finished second place in the tournament with a total score of 82. She was also second place overall in league, first team all-league and first individual qualifier for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section DIII playoffs at Bing Maloney in Sacramento. Also qualifying was Emily Greenwood, third qualifier and Bronte Lucero was named sixth qualifier for playoffs. Playoffs began on Monday, Oct. 26 after The Leader’s sports press time. The Lady Mustangs finished third overall in the league standings, finishing the season with a 9-5 record behind undefeated East Union (14-0) and Kimball (11-3).

 

TENNIS

The team traveled to Kimball High School in Tracy for a two-day tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and returned Thursday, Oct. 22 for the doubles tournament. On Tuesday, the singles took the court where Danika Brown made her way to the quarterfinals but fell short of advancing to the finals. Thursday, Cori Barney and Danika Brown took second place overall. The duo of Courtney Rodgers and Alyssa Gouveia also had a strong outing as they placed fourth overall. The playoffs begin Tuesday, Oct. 27 and continue through Nov. 11. Oakdale’s opponents and time slots have yet to be determined.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Oakdale’s varsity team has improved to a perfect 11-0 league record after earning hard fought battles against Manteca and Kimball this past week. The girls traveled to Manteca on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to take on the Lady Buffaloes. In a thrilling five set battle, Oakdale walked out of the gym with a 3-2 win. Taking the first two sets 26-24, 25-22 the Lady Mustangs fell 23-25, 19-25 to go to a decisive fifth frame. Oakdale knocked off Manteca 15-12 in the final game. Lauren Ott led the team in kills (14), digs (34) and blocks with six. Isabella Cobarruvias and Jocelyn Burke each had 22 assists in the contest.

Two days later the Lady Mustangs hosted Kimball in another thriller. In a four game set, Oakdale exited the gym with a hard fought 3-1 victory to remain undefeated in league play under first year head coach Heather Gonzalez. The Lady Mustangs galloped to an early 25-15, 25-16 lead after two sets. However, the Lady Jags clawed their way to a 25-20 third set victory to take it to a fourth frame. Oakdale escaped with a 25-21 victory to earn their 11th league win. Ott led the team in kills with 16, while Shaye Spani and Makkena Ryan each had two blocks in the contest. Oakdale will travel to Weston Ranch on Thursday, Oct. 29 and finish the season at home against Central Catholic for Senior Night 2015 on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Ott, Spani and Savannah Rogers will all be honored following the junior varsity game.
