Early season success has found its way to the Oakdale High School girls tennis team in 2017. This past week Oakdale improved to 4-0 in Valley Oak League play after defeating Kimball and Lathrop.
On Tuesday, Sept. 12 the girls defeated Kimball 7-2 at home. Five of the six singles competitors walked away victorious for the Lady Mustangs. Tayla Barry (6-3, 7-6), Tavin Barry (6-3, 6-0), Mackenzie Brown (6-0, 6-2), Breanna Morgan (6-3, 6-0) and Shannen Yang (6-2, 6-4) all won their sets. Lijan Bucad fell in an upset to Maxine Jacque (6-7, 4-6) in a battle of the top singles players.
Oakdale’s doubles took two out of three against the visiting Jaguars. Kendra Branch and Cailie Rariden (6-2, 6-2), Megann Pierson and Allison Koelmans (6-1, 6-3) won their sets. Paige Morgan and Savannah Gustafson fell 4-6, 4-6 in straight sets.
Two days later the girls were at it again as they traveled to Lathrop to clash with the Spartans, where Oakdale earned an 8-1 road win. Bacud bounced back in singles action to win 7-5, 6-2. Tayla Barry (6-1, 6-4), Brown (6-1, 7-6), and Tavin Barry (6-2, 6-2) were straight sets winners. Morgan showed her resiliency by wining in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-1). Yang fell in three sets for Oakdale (6-2, 1-6, 2-6).
The doubles teams were all winners as Branch and Rariden (6-1, 6-1), Morgan and Jessica Garcia (6-2, 6-2) and Pierson and Koelmans (6-1, 6-0) won in straight sets.
Oakdale hosted Sierra on Tuesday, Sept. 19 following The Leader’s press time. Thursday, Sept. 21 the girls will host Central Catholic at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 the girls are scheduled to host the novice tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
