Spring Sports Wrap - Mustangs Tackle Opposition, Track Girls Shine At MJC

Oakdale High track and field, softball, tennis and golf teams saw action despite recent poor weather conditions. Following is a summary of prep results.

Track

The Oakdale girls just keep winning. The Lady Mustangs out-pointed 15 competing programs to snare top honors with 185 points at the Modesto Junior College Invitational on April 7. Second place went to Buhach Colony while East Union settled for 72 points in third.

Me’che Brown was third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and a member of 400 and 1600 (first) relay teams that finished top-3. Kim Linder (second in the 400) and Justina Keith also ran on the winning 1600 relay with Kellie Gratigny, who won the 400, triple jump and was second in the long jump. Jennie Siemsen won the 3200 while Ashlyn Durham placed second in the 800 and third in the 1600. Deziree Pennington was third in the 100 hurdles and third in the triple jump while Macey Caris won the long jump and Carly Rogers was third in the pole vault. Alyssa Flores and Hayley McIntyre went 1-2 in the discus while Kelsey McIntyre was second in the shot put.

Kyle Peterson led the Oakdale boys by winning the shot put and ending second in the discus. Manny Hernandez won the high jump.

Softball

Oakdale went 3-1 in the prestigious platinum bracket of the NorCal Classic in Tracy after a 6-5 win over Bear Creek, a 7-0 victory over Freedom, a 3-0 defeat of Clovis and a 4-3 loss to Pioneer. Shelby Reali started all four games with 32 strikeouts across tourney play.

Kaila Olson hit 1 for 3 with two runs and a double against Bear Creek while Lauren Sanders managed a 1 for 2 outing with two RBIs. Ghianna Falconi hit 2 for 3 with a run and two stolen bases against Freedom. Anneliese Davis hit 2 for 3 with two runs, a double and two RBIs while Hanna Holland (run, double, two RBIs) and Rachel Thomason (1 for 1, RBI) swung the bat well. Shelby Cordova batted 2 for 3 with a run against Clovis while Rylie Pena was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Cordova was also 1 for 1 with two walks and a run against Pioneer. Stephanie Fauria belted a triple to represent the potential tying run in the bottom of the last inning, but Oakdale couldn’t plate her across.

“We played four quality teams,” Oakdale coach Larry Loger said. “We need to get healthy and have our pitching hold up like it has been.”

The Lady Mustangs were fresh off a narrow 6-5 win over Manteca that saw scores in six of the 14 inning frames. Sanders batted 3 for 4 with two doubles while Fauria smashed three RBIs. Francesca Orvis also hit 2 for 4 with an RBI. Reali struck out 10.

The Oakdale JV team went 1-1 in the NorCal Classic after a 3-1 loss to West and a 6-5 win over Bear Creek. Megan Reali tossed both games and hit 2-2 for two RBIs against Bear Creek. Markie Taylor batted 2 for 3 with an RBI in the same game while Kelsey Hardey hit 2 for 2. The Mustangs were rolling after a 12-0 win over Manteca earlier in the week. Reali tossed the shutout with seven strikeouts, ending a defensive error from a perfect game. She also batted 3 for 3 with three runs and five RBIs. Natasha Lelieur hit 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs while Kaitlin Burke was 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Tennis

The Oakdale boys bested Lathrop 7-2 on April 10 after big wins from across the lineup. Jared Firstbrook won 6-0, 6-2 while Chandler Johnson landed 6-0, 6-1 wins. Austin Clayton won in 6-1, 6-1 sets while Miguel Rosales took 7-6(8-6), 7-5 wins.

Oakdale doubles tandems Sergio Gutierrez and Miguel Barajas won 6-0, 6-2 while Frank Rossier and Trae Folla won 6-2, 6-0. Dylan Hawksworth and Brandon Fischer won with forfeits.

Golf

Oakdale’s boys golf team slipped to their lone defeat of the year in a 204-206 defeat to host East Union on April 12. Ian Stogdell led Oakdale with a 37-stroke score on the par-39 course while Isaac Rellemas shot a 40. Ryan Jones carded a 42 while Robby Wikoff (44) and Vince Fauria (43) reported solid scores.

Baseball

Oakdale went 1-2 in the difficult Crown Classic Tournament at Valley Christian in San Jose. The team fell 5-0 to host Valley Christian, lost 2-1 to Saratoga and bounced back with a 9-3 win over Los Gatos.
