The Oakdale Lady Mustangs soccer season concluded with a second round loss at Liberty Ranch on Friday night, Feb. 23.

The squad bowed out of the playoffs with a 7-0 loss.

Oakdale entered the tournament as the ninth seed and had won their final four regular season games to get there. In the first round Oakdale traveled to Sonora to take on the eighth seeded Wildcats on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

After a scoreless first half, the two teams turned it up in the second. Oakdale’s Talia Millard found Kassy Rodriguez for the first goal of the game to go up 1-0 with 32 minutes remaining. With 18 minutes remaining Sonora tied the game on an unassisted goal and the game went to overtime. In the second overtime period a handball violation was called on Sonora and sophomore Daniela Dela Riva was called upon to take the penalty kick and made the goal for the road win.

“The ball went over her head and between her hands and finger tips,” Dela Riva recalled.

“It was a crazy game and very cold,” said head coach Grace Fernandes, with the temperature dipping down to 32 degrees.

Brianna Montoya was in goal for the Lady Mustangs in the win. Oakdale also defeated Sonora on the road, 4-3, on Dec. 19 during the regular season.

Two nights later the girls took on top seeded Liberty Ranch, which entered the tournament on a seven-game winning streak. The Hawks scored three goals in the first half and exploded for four more in the second half in the win.

“They are a good team, well coached and they definitely deserve to go on in the playoffs,” said coach Fernandes.

Although the season ended on a down note, the girls improved from a four win club a year ago to a reach the second round of the CIF Division IV playoffs. Oakdale began the regular season losing two straight but bounced back and finished 6-6-2 to finish in fourth place in the Valley Oak League.
