This past Saturday literally was known as “Scrimmage Saturday” on the Oakdale High School campus. Parking spaces were at a premium, as a pair of fall sports teams hosted events and the local Oakdale Stampede youth football program filled The Corral.

At the high school level, girls water polo hosted a six-team scrimmage early Saturday morning at the Oakdale Aquatic Center and the volleyball team also hosted multiple teams inside both gyms on campus.

In the pool Oakdale hosted the girls water polo scrimmage for the third consecutive year. Showing up for the scrimmage were Sonora, Lodi, Woodcreek, Clovis North and El Capitan.

“This is a good way for us to get ready for the season,” said Oakdale Head Coach Diane Kline.

The girls hit the pool for competition again in Clovis for the Central Valley Showdown, which is a two-day tournament that begins on Friday, Sept. 1. Boys water polo will travel up the hill to face Sonora on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Inside the gyms the Lady Mustang volleyball squads were serving up preseason action with a scrimmage of their own. All three levels of the volleyball program were in action, the freshmen, JV and varsity girls all getting in plenty of work against opponents from a number of different schools and leagues. On Tuesday, Aug. 22 the girls were scheduled to host a scrimmage against Pitman. Oakdale hits the court once again on Saturday, Aug. 26 for the Varsity Flock Tournament at Cosumnes River College. The girls begin one-on-one preseason action on Tuesday, Aug. 29 when they host Hughson. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. beginning with freshmen action, followed by the JV and varsity.

On the road the football teams traveled to Tracy on Saturday for a scrimmage against Tracy High School. All three levels competed in the workout. Freshmen open the preseason at home, hosting Sonora on Thursday, Aug. 24. The Oakdale JV and varsity football Mustangs travel to Sonora on Friday night, Aug. 25 to take on the longtime rival in the preseason opener.

The cross country team was scheduled to host their Red/Gold Fox Trot scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 18 but it was rescheduled for this Friday, Aug. 25.

The girls golf team hosted Downey for a scrimmage on Tuesday, Aug. 22 and will return to the links today, Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club for a scrimmage against Turlock. Valley Oak League opener for the golf team is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29 against Kimball on the road.

The girls tennis team traveled to Enochs High School in Modesto on Tuesday, Aug. 22 for a scrimmage and will wrap up scrimmage play at Turlock High School on Thursday, Aug. 24. The Valley Oak League season opens up on Tuesday, Sept. 5 on the road against Weston Ranch.
