Hard times on the hardwood as the OHS varsity girls have lost three straight games. Oakdale dropped a pair of home games this week to visiting Manteca and East Union this past week.

The Lady Mustangs hosted Manteca on Jan. 27 where the Lady Buffaloes stampeded Oakdale 53-32. Leading the way for Oakdale was freshman guard Sarah Bohrer with 10 points and two steals in the losing effort. Oakdale trailed 27-16 at the half and were down 43-22 after three.

Two days later the Lady Mustangs took the hardwood and hosted East Union on Thursday night, Jan. 29. Oakdale got off to a fast start as senior guard Caylie O’Neal scored the first points of the game as she slashed through two Lancer defenders in the lane for a layup. As quickly as the Lady Mustangs scored, East Union found their stroke and went on a 10-0 run and finished the opening quarter with a 12-4 lead. Lady Mustang Micaela Maaske, who scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Oakdale, grabbed an offensive rebound and put back to stop the East Union run. Maddi Hackbarth had a key block down low and her defensive efforts paid dividends on the other end of the floor when her midrange jumper bounced off the back of the rim straight up into the air and found the bottom of the net to make the score 14-11 with 4:57 left in the half.

Junior Colleen Ibasco made a pair of free throws to give Oakdale a late first half 15-14 lead but that was quickly erased after a pair of deep three balls from East Union.

The Lady Mustangs went into the break down 19-15, and found themselves down 38-28 after three.

One play that got the crowd on its feet was a steal by O’Neal and the senior taking it coast to coast for a layup on the other end late in the fourth. O’Neal finished with four points and a steal. Unfortunately for the Lady Mustangs it was not enough to overcome the visitors’ effort and the Lady Mustangs fell 50-36.

The varsity girls (1-7) look to turn things around when they hit the road against Sierra on Tuesday, Feb. 3 (after Leader press time) and return home on Thursday, Feb. 5 when they take on Weston Ranch. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Off to a great start the girls improved to 8-0 on the season after a pair of home wins this past week. The team knocked off Manteca 31-24 on Tuesday night, Jan. 27. Leading the way for Oakdale was Alejandra Vargas with 11 points. Two nights later the girls defeated East Union 49-35 behind a trio of players (Maddy Brewer, Lily Ibarra and Emily Bennett) who scored 11 points each.
