Mustangs Shine In Weekday Action

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE -- Wins over Valley Oak League and Valley Foothill Conference opponents has served Oakdale volleyball, tennis, soccer and water polo teams well in recent play.

Volleyball

Oakdale’s varsity girls swept Manteca and Kimball in two matches across a three-day span this week. The team punished Manteca after 25-10, 25-14, 25-12 scores on Tuesday. Kaitlin Van Ryn landed 10 kills, 17 points and six digs while Domi Powell added 11 kills, eight points and four digs. Justin Keith chipped in eight kills, six points and nine digs while Kellie Gratigny managed 20 assists, six points and five digs. Brittany Salas (10 digs) also contributed in the win.

Two days later the Mustangs took a three-game win over Kimball (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) after a 14-point effort from Van Ryn. Powell had seven kills, nine points and three digs while Keith put up 10 kills and six points. Salas came up with four points and seven digs while Gratigny made good on six scoring serves.

Tennis

With a playoff seed on the line, Oakdale ousted Kimball in a hard-fought 7-2 victory on Tuesday to secure the third and final advancement into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Freshman Christine Kim won in 7-5, 6-0 scores atop the singles ladder while Lindsay Dunn took 6-1, 6-4 victories.

Alejandra Martinez (6-3, 6-1) and Laurie Baxter (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 [7-3]) also won singles matches.

Katie Odom and Corin Hernandez (6-0, 6-1) took a one-sided doubles win while Taylor Davis and Carly Rogers fought to a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory. Francesca Orvis and Nicole Dickens took a competitive 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win as well.

“Our freshman Christine Kim is playing great. It took her a game or two to figure high school tennis, but she improved so much,” Oakdale coach Judy Vejar said. “Lindsay Dunn only has trouble with two girls at No. 2. She is cool and strong this year.

“Doubles for us is the best in the league”

Water Polo

The Oakdale girls snuck a narrow 4-3 victory over Los Banos on Oct. 19 after nine Hayley Benson saves. Savannah Stender scored three goals while Cassie Lee chipped in one.

Soccer

Oakdale fell 3-1 to East Union on Monday, but beat Weston Ranch in a 3-2 showdown on Wednesday.
