Mustang Golfers Tie For Valley Oak League Crown

East Union High’s sterling 407-stroke performance at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Course awarded the Lancers top honors at the league championships, but couldn’t erase a full season of Oakdale success as the two programs settled for co-Valley Oak League championship honors on Tuesday, May 4.Oakdale (15-1) edged the Lancers (13-3) twice in VOL duals, and saw freshman Ian Stogdell finish just one stroke behind VOL MVP Kyle Harman.Stogdell shot a brilliant 77 to place second at the league championships, and watched teammate Austin Whitworth card an 84 in ninth place. Kyle Derby shot an 87 while Vince Fauria added an 88 and Michael Tripp shot an 89. Connor Gust carded a 93 as well.Whitworth and Stogdell earned enough VOL points to make first team all league while Derby and Gust took second team honors.“I really feel like they are pulling together and working forward as a group,” Oakdale coach Lee McGhee said. “We are looking to minimize our mistakes and record the lowest scores possible.”Oakdale advanced with East Union, Sonora and Sierra to the Division IV championships at the Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville on Monday, though results were not available at press time.The top team and best three individuals will move on to compete in the SJS Masters.“It looks like it’s going to be wet and sloppy for everybody,” McGhee said prior to the Monday competition. “So hopefully my guys are prepared for that with the right gear.“I really feel like they have a shot at winning it.”The SJS Masters are on Monday, May 17, at The Reserve in Stockton’s Spanos Park.
