Matmen Dominate Valley Oak League Competition

It was a day of dominance by the Oakdale High School wrestling program. Fresh off their Sac-Joaquin Section Championship, 11 Mustang wrestlers battled their way to Valley Oak League championships on the way to the team’s 12th straight VOL title.

A total of 14 Mustangs competed at Sierra High School on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the 2017-2018 Valley Oak League Championship Tournament. Brayden Abell (108), Clayton Bashor (115), Henry Porter (120), Seth Borba (132), Ricky Torres (138), Jake Ryan (145), Dakota McNeil (152), Gabe Martinez (170), Cody Golding (180), Colbey Harlan (195) and Jorge Barajas (220) all claimed league championships. Justin Jericoff placed second in the 170-pound weight division, Ethan Holcomb (126) placed third and heavyweight Ben Molina placed fourth.

With the big win all 14 grapplers will compete next week in the Divisionals at River Valley High School in Yuba City. The big tournament will take place Friday and Saturday with the chance for these wrestlers to continue their season and advance to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championship at Stockton Arena on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24.

Currently Oakdale is ranked number one in the section, and sixth overall in the state. Abell is currently ranked 14th in the state, Porter is ranked eighth, Ricky Torres eighth, Jake Ryan third, Gabe Martinez is fifth, Cody Golding comes in at 15th, and Colbey Harlan is ranked first in their respective weight classes.
