Lady Mustangs Earn Wins In League Play

As we approach the tail end of the 2015 fall sports season, the Oakdale girls finished the week strong on several fronts. Girl’s golf, tennis, volleyball and water polo all got in the win column this past week.

 

GIRLS GOLF

Two matches, two wins for the team. Oakdale dismissed Weston Ranch 264-348 and a 236-310 win over Lathrop capped off a perfect week for Oakdale. Freshman duo Taylor Stewart and Chloe Liekhus have been impressive their first year in the program. Stewart continues to lead the Lady Mustangs as she turned in scorecards of 41 and 34; both team leaders. Liekhus shot a 54 and 48 this week. Emily Greenwood also provided the Lady Mustangs with low scores as she shot a 55 and 37 this week. Others include Bronte Lucero (55), Anne Homer (60, 50) and Katie Holmes (59). Oakdale will now turn its attention to Sierra when the Lady Timberwolves come to town on Thursday, Oct. 15.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Head coach Heather Gonzales has the team rolling as the Lady Mustangs varsity volleyball team pieced together a pair of league victories to remain undefeated in league play (6-0). Oakdale knocked off visitor Weston Ranch on Tuesday, Oct. 5 3-0 and took a thriller at Central Catholic 3-1. The Lady Mustangs made short work of the Lady Cougars as Oakdale won 25-15, 25-18 and 25-20 in three sets. Lauren Ott’s 17 kills, and Isabella Cobbarruvias’s 17 assists and two aces helped lift the team. Savannah Rodgers had a game high 27 digs for Oakdale. Makkena Ryan and Jodie Whitley provided defense with a block apiece. In the team’s dramatic road win, Oakdale won the first set 25-16. The host Central squad edged out Oakdale 28-26 in the second set to even things up. Oakdale survived the third set 29-27 to take a one set advantage. In the fourth and final frame, Oakdale dominated 25-12 to walk off the court a winner. Abigail Matoso, Shaye Spani and Cobarruvias led the team in aces with two apiece. Cobarruvias also had 21 assists in the win. Oakdale looks to continue their winning ways as they traveled to Lathrop on Tuesday, Oct. 13, game was held after The Leader press time. Oakdale plays host to Sierra on Thursday, Oct. 15 this week. The junior varsity and frosh girls also won their games this past week.

 

TENNIS

The Lady Mustangs hit the court on Thursday, Oct. 8 and doubled up Sierra 6-3. Five of the six singles girls helped carry the Lady Mustangs as Cori Barney, Carley Newbill, Alyssa Gouviea, Maddie Brewer and Jessica Gorman all earned victories. The tandem of Taryn Lane and Shennan Yang were victorious in their doubles match in three sets. Oakdale finishes their regular season this week when the girls travel to Modesto to face Central Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after The Leader press time. Oakdale’s season finale is Thursday, Oct. 15 at OHS when the girls host Manteca.

 

WATER POLO

The varsity girls water polo team went 2-0 this week as they knocked off Ripon 12-7 on Wednesday, Oct. 7 and St. Mary’s 7-6 on Saturday, Oct. 10. Oakdale is set to host Monache on Thursday, Oct. 15. Oakdale’s frosh/sophomore girls lost 9-7 against St. Mary’s.
