Boys Open Valley Oak League Play With Pair Of Tennis Wins

After nearly two weeks away from the court, the Oakdale High School boys tennis team returned to action. On Wednesday, March 8 the boys hosted Weston Ranch in the Valley Oak League season opener. The Mustangs did not look fazed by the layoff and defeated the visiting Cougars 9-0. In singles action Zack Miller defeated Ian Obiso in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Daniel Lubeck knocked off Yeng Vang 6-0, 6-1. Oakdale’s number three singles Isaiah Canchola battled Brendan Lee in the match of the day. Canchola fell 4-6 but bounced back in the second set to win 7-6 (8-6) and won the third set 12-10. Angel Padilla made short work of Jeremy Bagnus 6-0, 6-0. Liam Peters finished off Oscar Mitchell in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 as well to finish strong for the singles.

Oakdale’s doubles had a light day, as the teams of C.J. Toledo and Frankie Dutra, and Cameron Bettencourt and Clay Verdegaal won via forfeit. The final team of Colby Dickman and Chris Frye won by default. Oakdale earned a victory by forfeit over East Union on Friday afternoon as the Lancers did not have enough players to compete. Oakdale traveled to Tracy on Tuesday, March 14 following The Leader’s press time. The Mustangs return home to host Lathrop today, March 15 at 3:30 p.m. and travel to Manteca to take on Sierra on Friday, March 17.
