Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field titles don’t come easy, especially considering the all-division finale features some of the best athletes in the state vying for one final postseason advancement.

The competition is often dominated by historically powerful large-school Sacramento area programs with a host of stellar athletes. Oakdale senior Manny Hernandez exploded onto the track and field scene with huge jumps in 2012, and made his postseason a historic one by out-jumping all competitors at the SJS Masters on May 24.

Hernandez jumped 6 feet, 9 inches to win a Masters title and advance to the state meet, where he is favored to medal. He earns Athlete of the Week honor from The Leader for his efforts.
