League Openers For Tennis, Volleyball And Water Polo

Oakdale High School fall sports is in full swing with many squads now into the regular season. Oakdale’s tennis team, volleyball and water polo teams opened up Valley Oak League action this past week. Here is a round up of the VOL competition.

 

TENNIS

In a pair of home matches, the Lady Mustangs tennis team defeated both East Union and Kimball. On Tuesday, Sept. 12 the girls earned an 8-1 win over the Lancers. Oakdale’s singles went 5-1 overall in the contest. Payton Avila won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In a battle of number two’s, Riley Miller dropped her match 1-6, 6-1, 1-6. Kaylee Schauer won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Maddie McTague won her match in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Aubrey Healy won 6-3, 6-1 and capping off singles was Riley Avila with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. In doubles the team of Sydney Birkes and Kylee Joseph won 6-0, 6-2. Jacy Dorr and Emily Correia earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Jill McAndrews and Reece Riley won 6-3, 6-1.

Two days later Oakdale knocked off Kimball 5-2. Payton Avila won her match 6-3, 6-1. Schauer won 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Riley Avila won 6-1, 6-1. McTague won 6-1, 6-1. Taking losses for Oakdale in singles were Miller and Healy. In doubles Joseph and Birkes won 6-2, 6-1.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 the girls traveled to Modesto to face Central Catholic following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale resumes play on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Manteca at 3:30 p.m.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Oakdale varsity girls volleyball took a 3-0 loss in their season opener. It came on the road against Sierra on Thursday, Sept. 14. Oakdale lost 15-25, 18-25, 22-25. This was their lone game of the week. They were scheduled to face Manteca in a road contest on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Oakdale hosts East Union on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:15 p.m.

 

GOLF

Oakdale golf was to resume play on Tuesday, Sept. 19 after a break last week. The girls will next be in action on Thursday, Sept. 21 at Manteca Park Golf Course for Valley Oak League #2. Tee time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

 

WATER POLO

Thursday, Sept. 14 Oakdale High School water polo opened up their Valley Oak League season with a home win over East Union. Both the varsity boys and varsity girls took to the pool and earned home wins over the Lancers.

For the girls, Oakdale defeated East Union 19-6. In the first half, Presley Barnes scored six goals and Oakdale led 12-4 at the half. Others with first half goals were Lacey Perriera (three), Holly Hixon (two) and Allyson Criswell (one). In the second half Oakdale scored four more goals in the third period and tagged on three more in the fourth. Criswell scored two more goals and Izzy Salzer, Ellie Frazer, and Perriera each added one.

The Oakdale boys took a 12-0 shutout victory. Wiley Ballantyne and Jeremiah Jansen paced the team with four goals each. Cullen Liekhus scored three for the Mustangs. Oakdale’s final goal of the game came from Baron Haidlen. Goalkeeper Luke Guignard had six saves in the contest. Oakdale has a bye this week and return to action on Thursday, Sept. 28 when they host Kimball. Action is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
