Late Season Surge Shows Tennis Turnaround

The Oakdale High School girls tennis team played in one match this past week. On Tuesday, Sept. 25 Oakdale hosted East Union and earned an 8-1 victory.

To start the day off strong, Oakdale’s singles took five out of six from the visiting Lancers. Oakdale’s number one Tayla Barry defeated Isabel Moreno 6-2, 6-3. Kendra Branch defeated Nadia Cardona 6-0, 6-1. Winning with the same score as Branch was Lijian Bacud over Sara Gloeckler. Mackenzie Brown took her match in straight sets over Karina Stembeck 6-0, 6-1 as well. Senior Shannen Yang won her match against Savanna Hudson 6-3, 6-1. Oakdale’s lone defeat of the afternoon came when Jessica Garcia fell to Jenny Garcia in three sets. Oakdale’s Garcia lost the first set 5-7 but tied the series with a 6-7 victory. In the third set she fell 5-7.

In doubles it was a clean sweep for Oakdale. All three Oakdale teams won in straight sets. Alyossa Jingco and Paige Morgan defeated Chloe Alveda and Mena Guevara 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Jericoff and Tanna Barba blanked the duo of Maribel Carranza and Arianna Pacheco 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the day was Katelyn Signorelli and Savanna Gustafson with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alisha Costa and Reema Gill. With the win, Oakdale has won two of their last three games after starting the season off 0-6.

Following The Leader’s press time, Oakdale traveled to Modesto to play Central Catholic. This Thursday Oakdale will travel to Manteca to take on Sierra at 3:30 p.m.

Oakdale closes out the season with a pair of home games against Manteca on Tuesday, Oct. 9 and the season finale will be held against Weston Ranch on Thursday, Oct. 11. Both matches are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at Oakdale High School.
