Strong play translated to more victories for the Oakdale High School girls golf and tennis teams this past week. Volleyball battled tough but came up just short, as the squads work their way through the Valley Oak League schedule.
GOLF
On the links, it was three wins for the Lady Mustang golfers. Oakdale defeated Kimball via forfeit as the Jaguars did not field a full team. Oct. 3, the OHS girls hosted East Union where Oakdale pulled off a 254-281 home win over the Lancers. Both teams entered the match 3-0 in nine-hole action, and the two teams finished first and second in the first two 18-hole VOL tournaments. With Oakdale on a week break due to maintenance at Oakdale Golf and Country Club, this was the first time taking the course in over a week. Leading Oakdale on the day was sophomore Regan Shatswell who carded a 44. She was followed by fellow sophomore Aubrey Thompson with a 48. Hannah Herschbach and Xcaret Duque both shot 51, while Sam Oliveira (60) and Jenna O’Neil (64) rounded out the scoring for Oakdale.
Thursday, Oct. 5 the girls traveled to Manteca Park Golf Course to face Sierra. Oakdale won 240-337. Leading the way for the Mustangs were juniors Herschbach (44) and Duque (44). Other scores included Thompson (46), Shatswell (51), Oliveira (55) and O’Neil (65).
Oakdale next turns its attention to the VOL Championship tournament, being hosted on Oct. 17 at Micke Grove in Lodi.
TENNIS
The Mustangs won both of their contests this past week. Oakdale improved to 7-0 after knocking off both East Union and Kimball. Oakdale defeated East Union 9-0 and Kimball 8-1. Against the Lancers, Payton Avila won 6-1, 6-2. Kaylee Schaver won 6-2, 6-1. Riley Avila won 6-3, 6-0. Maddie McTague did not surrender a point in her 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory. Audrey Healy won 6-1, 6-1. Kylee Joseph did not give up a point in her 6-0, 6-0 singles win. The doubles teams also won all of their matches. Sydney Birkes and Jacy Dorr won 6-0, 6-2. Jill McAndrews and Reece Riley won 6-3, 6-2. Emily Correia and Makenzie Allen finished the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win. The girls also made short work of Kimball, winning easily. Oakdale was to face off against Central Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 10 following The Leader’s press time.
VOLLEYBALL
Oakdale girls dropped both of their contests this week as they fell to Sierra 3-1 and Manteca 3-0. In the first set against Sierra, Oakdale battled to a thrilling 27-25 victory. In set number two Oakdale lost 21-25. The Timberwolves clawed their way to a 24-26 third set win over Oakdale and closed it out in the fourth, the Lady Mustangs falling by a 14-25 score in that deciding set. Oakdale then lost to Manteca 16-25, 19-25 and 20-25. Oakdale will host Kimball on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Senior Night 2023.
