Heading out on the road and suiting up for a trio of games at the Grace Davis 25th annual Basketball Tournament, the Oakdale freshmen came home as champions.

The tournament was hosted Dec. 27 through 29, over the long holiday break.

Head coach Nate Madsen couldn’t have been happier with the outcome.

“The Oakdale freshman boys basketball team is bringing basketball success back to Oakdale with their championship win at the 25th Annual Grace Davis Freshman Basketball Tournament,” said Madsen. “The OHS freshman team’s tournament victory is the first in 12 years and the second in the past 25 years.”

Both head coach Madsen (OHS, 2006) and assistant coach Vince Thompson (OHS 2007) placed second in the same tournament in their freshman years, respectively.

In the opening round, the frosh boys shut down host school Grace Davis by a 43-28 verdict, paced by the 11 points effort of Jake Norris. Townes Geisler added nine and Declan Hynes had eight points.

The squad went to double overtime to defeat Turlock, 53-50, in the second round with 18 points from Norris, 16 from Noah Zepeda. Finally, the young basketball team claimed the tournament title on Dec. 29 with an overtime 50-40 win over Central Catholic. Norris and teammate Jacob Cavanaugh each had 15 points in the championship contest.
