Fast Start For Oakdale Cross Country Runners

Thursday, Sept. 2 the Oakdale High School cross country team headed to Tracy for the annual Jaguar Invitational. A total of 18 teams participated in the meet that took place at Eagal Lakes.

The Mustang varsity girls took first place overall in the five kilometer run. Junior Kassidy Fmura placed sixth overall with a time of 21:53. Freshman Morgan Merzon placed ninth at 22:17 and junior Angelica Elizondo placed 15th at 23:31.

The varsity boys placed second overall and were led by a pair of top 10 finishers. Juniors Dax Daley and Caleb Cavanaugh raced side-by-side and at the end of the race, it was Daley edging out Cavanaugh by one second. Daley placed sixth overall at 17:59 and Cavanaugh placed seventh overall at 18:00 in the five kilometer race. Junior Nathan Luca placed 16th at 19:15.

Oakdale’s junior varsity boys raced in a 2.1 mile run. The Mustangs placed second overall. Ean Sweeny, a junior, placed seventh at 14:14. Junior Khriztian Escalante placed 10th overall at 14:49. Gabe Archuleta finished 13th at 15:06.

Head coach of the Mustangs cross country program Guy Fowler was pleased with how the teams ran.

“It was a very good way to open the season. We performed very well today and we still have some key runners returning next week. This is going to be a fun year.”

Their next meet takes place on Saturday, Sept. 11 for the Josh Ruff Invitational at Folsom High School.
