Runners of all ages will hit the streets in Riverbank for the annual Run for the Cheese in October, with sign-ups available now.

Continuing to build on a solid history of success, the 2023 Oakdale High School cross country program is thriving and their latest event was the CIF Sac-Joaquin Subsection Meet.

On Saturday, Nov. 4 both the boys and girls varsity teams competed at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds for the meet. Oakdale’s varsity boys took first place overall and the varsity girls placed fifth overall. Their impressive results have them advancing to the Section finals this coming weekend, Nov. 11.

Omar Alsaidi placed first overall for the varsity boys in the three-mile race with a time of 16:19. Jackson Oliveira placed second overall at 16:22 and Mason Oliveira finished in third place at 16:25. The Mustangs had one more top 10 finisher as Ismael Dominguez placed ninth overall at 16:38. Other Mustang runners included Parker Whitemyer (35th place, 17:31), Abner Gonzalez (45th place, 17:47) and Logan Daley (64th place, 18:05). Oakdale is currently ranked 17th in the nation and third overall in the state.

For the girls, Oakdale had one top 25 finisher in Bradie Evans. The sophomore placed 17th overall at 20:29 in the three-mile run. Brady Wylie placed 27th at 21:09. Other competitors representing Oakdale were: Ava Calandro (38th place, 21:29), Jordan Wylie (46th place, 22:06), Shelby Mitchell (47th place, 22:07) Shelby Cotner (50th place, 22:07) and Taylor Reams (52nd place (22:23).

“Both teams did what we needed to do on Saturday and that was to qualify for the Section Final Meet,” said head coach Guy Fowler. “Both teams got through the meet with no injuries and should have key runners back at the Section Meet. The kids are ready for a good week of practice and will be ready to qualify for the State Meet this Saturday.”

The Section final event will be held in Folsom.
