Bakersfield Trip Sees Three Mustangs Place At State

With a fourth, seventh and eighth place finish, three of Oakdale’s wrestlers capped their 2022-23 campaign with strong showings at the State Meet at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Head coach Steve Strange reported the three placed individually at the prestigious tournament and included: Eziequel Vela, seventh place at 122 pounds; Carlos Garcia, fourth at 172 pounds; and Wes Burford, eighth at 184 pounds.

Oakdale had 10 wrestlers qualify at the Masters Meet in Stockton, hosted Feb. 17 and 18, able to move on to the State competition. That was staged in Bakersfield starting Thursday, Feb. 23 and running through Saturday, Feb. 25.

Qualifying for Oakdale were, by weight class: Ezekiel Hernandez, 106 pounds; Eziequel Vela, 120; Jesse Meza, 126; Colton Silva, 145. Also, Brodie Johnson, 152 pounds; Payne Perkins, 160; Carlos Garcia, 170; Wes Burford, 184; Elias Corona, 195; and Emilio Johnson, 220 pounds.

“The wrestling team finished 10th overall,” said Strange, following up their Sac-Joaquin Section Masters team title with the solid effort at the State Meet.
