Peter H. Spahn, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, surrounded by family at his Oakdale home.

Born in San Francisco as the fourth of 12 children to parents Peter H. Spahn and Ruby A. Patzwald, he grew up in San Francisco’s Road District and was a student of Taylor Grade School, Portola High School, and Mission High School.

Mr. Spahn served in the United States Air Force after high school from 1949-1952, and he married the love of his life, Charlene Ann Suhling, in April 1954.

He worked as a plumber throughout the peninsula before becoming a certified building inspector. He retired in 1996 after more than 43 years of work as a contractor.

He spent his retirement volunteering in the communities he resided in, including maintaining local church buildings, as a member of the RCIA, an active participant of Meals on Wheels, and delivering Eucharist to the homebound.

A lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49ers, he never missed a game so long as he was alive.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Charlene; daughters, Chere (David) Caron, Theresa (Steven) Alexander, Marilyn, Carolyn; brother, Leroy; brother-in-law, Paul; sister-in-law, Betty; 12 Godchildren; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oakdale. A reception will follow in St. Mary’s Hall.

In lieu of gifts, remembrances may be made to any of the aforementioned programs for which he volunteered.
