Pauline Frances Mendes, 65, died Monday, Oct. 22 surrounded by her loved ones.

She was a lifelong resident of Oakdale.

She and her twin sister Francine were born to Joaquin and Pauline F. (Silva) Mendes. Her parents emigrated from the Azores to the United States early in their lives. They were very proud of their Portuguese heritage and wanted to instill that in their children. She and her family were proud members of the F.E.S. Society of Oakdale. From a young age she and her twin sister traveled throughout the Portuguese community serving as side maids, princesses, and queens of the festas.

She attended Oakdale schools. After completing high school, she married Dick Roberts and had their two children Rick and Nancey. She and her husband were married for 16 years.

Ms. Mendes continued to be a strong, determined and dedicated woman working and raising her children. In 1981, she began a 31-year relationship with her companion Howard Elwess. In the late ‘80s, she and her companion moved to her family ranch to care for her aging mother and help with the ranch. They enjoyed many years tending to the animals and pets. As the years passed, she became a dedicated and loving caregiver to her mother, until she passed away at age 94.

She loved spending time with her family and friends, and loved her dog Yahtzee. She will be missed by many.

She is survived by her companion of 31 years; Howard Elwess; son, Rick (Bethany) Roberts; daughter, Nancey Roberts (Mike) Devengenzo; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joaquin and Pauline Mendes; brother, Joe (Carroll) Mendonsa; sisters, Elsie (Gene) Goncalves, and Francine (Ron) Coble.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at River Oak Grace Community Church, 7712 Rodden Road, Oakdale.
