Johnnie ‘John’ Ray Spier, 65, of Turlock died in Modesto on Wednesday, June 2.

He was born in Riverside. At a young age, he moved with his family to Oakdale where he attended grammar school. He was also a graduate of Oakdale High School. He lived in Oakdale for 30 years.

Mr. Spier was a communications technician for Pacific Bell for 30 years, and for the Turlock Unified School District for 10 years.

He was member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Communications Workers of America.

He enjoyed woodworking, fly fishing, hiking, camping and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Suzanne Spier of Turlock; sons, Shanendoah Spier of Antioch, TN, Bob (Brett) Bronken of Turlock; daughters, Shawnessy (Scotty) Payne of Ceres, Sharendel Flores of Modesto, Stacey (Joey) Bronken of Turlock; brother, Danny (Mary) Spier of Oakdale; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jewel Spier; and sister, Billie Ruth Smith.

A celebration of life will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 at Friendly Village Club House, 2621 Prescott Road, Modesto.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Lung Association,1231 West Robinhood Dr., Ste. A-1, Stockton, CA 95207.
