Dr. David L. Bristow

Dr. David L. Bristow, D.V.M., 93, of Riverbank passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14. He was a long time resident of Riverbank.

Born on April 10, 1921 in San Jose, he was the son of Lowell and May Louise Bristow. He grew up and went to school in Salinas.

After graduation from Salinas High School, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines. After completing his tour of duty and receiving an Honorable Discharge, he enrolled in Washington State University, School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree and went to work for the State of California as a veterinarian pathologist in Petaluma. He later transferred to Turlock CA Pathology Laboratory for the state as veterinarian-in-charge. He became known as the State of California’s “poultry specialist pathologist”. He was the veterinarian-in-charge for 30 years. He had large and small business clients, and independent clients throughout the entire state.

After retiring from practice, he joined a local art league and began perfecting his painting skills. He painted landscapes of various kinds, and showed his pictures at local art shows. He sold two paintings to local art enthusiasts.

While in high school he enjoyed playing the violin in the school’s orchestra and continued to play later in life. Then he became a guitarist, playing classical and flamenco music. He enjoyed camping, hiking in Yosemite and deep sea fishing in Monterey and launching his boat in the San Joaquin Delta and fishing for striped bass. Lake Tahoe was another favorite fishing place. He was a gourmet cook of various ethnic origins and a wine collector.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Suzanne Bristow, of Riverbank; Pete (Melda) Nissen, Dana (Grace) Nissen, Nels (Michelle) Nissen; nieces Katherine Nissen, Megan Nissen of Escalon and nephews Lars Nissen, Michael Nissen, and Nels Nissen Jr. He also had an adoptive daughter, Erin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Herman Bristow and Bill Bristow, and brother-in-law James Nissen.

A very kind, gentle and loving person, he will be greatly missed.
